Bert Pittman

Botanist - SCDNR Heritage Trust Program

As a botanist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' Heritage Trust Program, Dr. Pittman works closely with the herbarium. Specimens from the Heritage Trust Program botanical surveys represent a significant contribution to the herbarium's collection.

Heritage Trust's mission is to protect SC's rare plants, animals, plant communities and other features of the state's natural and cultural heritage. Begun in 1976, Heritage Trust has protected 80,217 acres on 66 state Heritage Preserves located throughout the state. Plant (and animal) surveys allow the Heritage Trust Program to identify areas with rare species or rare ecosystems in need of protection.

Most of the Preserves are open to the public. The Heritage Trust Program website provides a map of Preserves with descriptions, regulations, and other pertinent information. Brochures are also available upon request: Heritage Preserves, DNR, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202, or call (803) 734-3893.

For a compilation of rare species in SC, view the list provided by SC Heritage Trust.
