Specimen Catalogs

The collections of the A.C. Moore Herbarium are generally organized based on five major plant groups. These divisions include: Algae, Bryophytes, Fungi, Lichens, and Vascular Plants. Specimen data for each major group are published accordingly to taxon-specific portals. Fern specimen data represent a special case and are published primarily within the Vascular Plant portal but also duplicated in the Pteridophyte portal. All data are shared to data aggregators iDigBio and GBIF.

Collection Strengths

Vascular plant specimens make up over 90% of the collections, with the majority of these collected in South Carolina or the Southeastern United States. Additional United States and international localities are represented by material obtained primarily through active exchange programs with other institutions. Other taxonomic groups include Bryophytes (3,500 specimens), Algae (892 specimens), Fungi (733 specimens), Lichens (386 specimens).

The Henry William Ravenel Collection of Converse College comprises important historical collections amassed during the 19th Century; including presumably our oldest specimen which was collected in 1814. The founding collection associated with Dr. Andrew Charles Moore’s efforts beginning in 1907 includes just over 360 specimens and is filed alongside more than 200 Type specimens.

An active collecting program and exchange with other institutions ensures that the collection adds about 2,000 new accessions annually.
